Last Minute Shuffle

     At some point or another I know we've all had that moment when a parent has come to us, at the beginning or end of class, asking for makeup up work for their son/daughter and we have had to scramble to get everything ready. I know it has happened to me on more than one occasion and has usually caught me off guard. It's not that I mind getting the work for my absent student. It's just that I enjoy being organized... so when I have had to gather paper to write down all of the makeup work, then look at my plans to make sure I don't miss anything, next go look in my extra copies to collect any activities completed (hopefully, it is not an assignment in which I gave the teacher next door my last copy), and gather my students books, you can see how that does not seem very organized.

So, in an attempt to avoid this last minute shuffle, as I like to call it. I created Makeup Work folders for my classroom. Initially, the idea was to create a folder that I could leave on an absent students desk in order to collect any papers that were passed out on that day. Well, that one simple idea seemed to have a life of its own and as a result I also created a Makeup Work form to record homework assignments, classwork, etc... or anything I didn't want to forget to tell my student. 

I also created review sheets for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division that I could include in the makeup work folder for students that I felt needed extra practice on a concept I had already taught them as opposed to giving them work on a new concept they missed in class that day.

     My makeup work packet is filled with other goodies including a list of websites that students can visit to play online games that review basic math skills, or science and social studies websites for those students that just enjoy exploring the world around us.
